On labor day, let me tell you what I think about UNIONS:

Workers Unions have given us some great things: 40 hour work week, child labor laws, workplace protections, minimum wage, etc.

But now it seems like the corporate powers are trying to break the Unions (ie Scott Walker and Wisconsin.)

The Unions are fighting as hard as they can to hold onto the pay and benefits that they have, but it’s a losing battle. As the economy continues to deteriorate as more and more wealth gets concentrated into the hands of the wealthiest .1%, workers in the private sector will continue to turn on the public sector unions; call it jealousy or fairness or whatnot, but we out here in the private workforce know we are working longer and harder for less pay and less benefits.

Public sector union workers are protected from that; many have very good job security, yearly raises, and good benefits and are fighting to keep it that way. Many government jobs are incredibly difficult to get due to the high number of applicants, yet they still command high salaries. As those in the private sector take more and more notice of the this “injustice” , popular opinion will turn against the unions and they will lose many of their prized benefits despite their scratching and clawing to hold on.

This is the wrong approach. Unions need to fight for everyone. Job security, a living wage, retirement pension, health benefits are all great things, but receiving them should not depend on where you work. If there was quality universal health care for example, we’d all have good health care benefits. If the minimum wage was high, we’d all have jobs with living wages (at least those who do have jobs). If everyone who works was promised financial security, that would be good for everyone.

So Unions: unite with each other and the rest of us and stop fighting for your union benefits and start fighting for living wages and benefits for EVERYONE, or else we all lose.
